Hey Bozeman, are Shape Ups and Ez Tone Rocker Shoes Good for You?

As a sports medicine chiropractor who treats all levels of athletes, I have seen tons of my patients come into Pro Chiropractic this past year with rocker bottom shoes.  A rocker bottom shoe or rocker shoe is a style of footwear which has a thick sole with rounded heel. I have ran into several brands of these including Skechers Shape-ups, MTB Shoes, Clark Wave, and Ryn Shoes.  These usually come in an athletic variety, but are also made as dress shoes and even sandals.  They range in price from $75 to upwards of $250 per pair.

These shoes were all the rage in the last 12 months, and their manufacturers tout their many claimed benefits, including relief from foot pain, knee pain, and low back and hip pain.  If you watch the commercials, some claim to improve posture, tone your legs, and even make your bottom look better in your jeans.
With my knowledge of human biomechanics and especially the training I have had with foot, gait, and orthotic issues, I have come to a solid opinion on rocker-type shoes.  Don't Spend Your $100 on These!  My opinion is that you would be better served to use that to have a skilled and trained sports medicine physician evaluate your lower extremity biomechanics and design and make a custom foot orthotics for you.  A custom foot orthotics is just that....CUSTOM for YOU,and designed to meet your individual foot care needs.  Additionally, research is starting to pour in that shows some potentially serious long term problems related to wearing rocker shoes.   A 2010 University of Wisconsin study commissioned by the American Council on Exercise compared exercise wearing rocker bottom shoes and regular running shoes.  Other studies have shown that the benefits noted from wearing these shoes were related to the exercise itself, more than shoes!
Here is a LINK to a another article I found that also discusses Rocker Shoes.

Sciatica and Low Back Pain? - Bozeman Chiropractic Questions, Answered!

Pain down the leg? Learn about some common causes!

The sciatic nerve, is made up of 5 smaller nerves that exit your low back and is the longest nerve in the body. It begins at your pelvis, and passes through your hip region and buttocks, before continuing down both legs. As it moves down each leg, the sciatic nerve branches out into smaller nerves. In addition to providing feeling to both your thighs, legs, ankles and feet, the smaller branches of the sciatic nerve control many of the muscles that make up the lower legs. Sciatica, is a term that describes pain that radiates along the course of this nerve.

What causes Sciatica?
When you have sciatica, or pain down your leg, it may be a sign that you have another problem in your body caused by pressure on a nerve in your low back.

Causes may include:
- Spinal misalignment (Subluxation)
- Disc Herniation or Bulging disc
- Bone Spurs
- Narrowing of spinal canal
- Nerve root compression
- Pregnancy
- Tumors
- Piriformis syndrome
Often times in men, pain down the leg is due to the fact that men carry their wallets in their back pocket and often sit on them.

How do I know if I have sciatica?
In the majority of cases, pain that begins in your lower back and travels to your buttock and down through the back of your leg, is most characteristic of sciatica. Other symptoms that you may notice in addition to your sciatic pain are tingling, numbness and muscle weakness in the leg that is affected. The severity of the pain can vary from a mild ache to a burning, sharp sensation or even severe debilitating discomfort. At times, the discomfort may be described as an electric shock or sudden jolt of pain. Over time, sciatic pain usually intensifies and becomes more intense when you increase pressure in your body, as in coughing, sitting or sneezing.

How is Sciatica Treated?
People suffering from sciatic pain are often given a combination of stretches, receive deep tissue massages of the piriformis muscle and get adjusted by a Chiropractor.
Great results are achieved through more conservative and natural methods.

Don't let your low back pain go untreated! Call our office today and let our Bozeman Chiropractic Physicians treat the CAUSE of your pain!

Beckham has it taped for fitness

DAVID BECKHAM will be in strapping shape against Estonia thanks to a Japanese method of muscle protection.

Becks, 32, has turned to a new craze of binding muscles called Kinesio Taping to take the strain off his back.
The tape was developed in Japan in the 1970s by Dr Kenzo Kase and is now taking professional sport by storm as stars put on the giant plasters to give their aching muscles more elasticity.
Beckham was introduced to Kinesio by Real Madrid's physios and wore the tape to devastating effect in their last game against Deportivo La Coruna where he set up two goals.
Real spokesman Dr Juan Carlos Hernandez said: "We've been using the Kinesio Taping for about a year.
"Other players have worn it before Beckham but after he was photographed with the tape the whole world is asking about it!
"The tape is made from a special material with elastic properties that protects and supports the muscle and we have seen it produces excellent results."

Exciting Recent Studies Prove....Immune System Responds to Chiropractic Adjustments!

The May 6, 2011 issue of Dynamic Chiropractic reported the following in regard to immune responses to Chiropractic adjustments:
  • "For many years, chiropractors have observed in their own practices that their patients sometimes demonstrate improvements of complaints related to immune problems: the disappearance or lessening of allergy symptoms, quicker recovery from or less frequent and severe colds and other respiratory infections, and so on."
  • "....a series of recent studies from several international research groups is systematically building the case that spinal manipulation appears to reduce the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and increase the blood levels of immunoregulatory cytokines."
  • "Another related avenue of research on neural immunoregulation evaluates the effects of spinal manipulation on the production of interleukin 2 (IL-2) - an immunoregulatory (not pro-inflammatory) cytokine and signaling molecule, instrumental in the body's response to microbial infection and for the body's ability to discriminate between foreign (non-self) and self. IL-2 is a pivotal cytokine in T-cell-dependent immune responses and plays a major role in the development, maintenance and survival of regulatory T cells. Thus, it is of critical importance in induction and sustenance of immune tolerance"

The Cancer Information and Support Network report on their website:
"Interleukin-2 is a type of protein called a cytokine that works to increase the production and function of various components of the body's immune system."

Interleukin-2
"This protein is normally produced in the body, but in small amounts. By increasing levels of IL-2, the increase in immune system components (specifically T cells and natural killer cells) will mount an attack against any cancer cells."

  • "In 2010, Teodorczyk-Injeyan, et al., continued with this research on induction and regulation of immune responses related to interactions between the immune and nervous systems mediated by actions of neurotransmitters and immunoregulatory cytokines. To this end, the researchers followed the subjects from the previous study to determine if the increased production of interleukin-2 as a result of a single thoracic manipulation is associated with increased antibody synthesis from monocytes."
  • "The paper reports that there were indeed significantly increased synthesis of immunoglobulin G (IgG) and immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies induced in cultures of peripheral blood mononuclear cells in subjects who received thoracic manipulation..."

The Take-Home Message
"The studies described above demonstrate an accumulation of evidence that indicates spinal manipulation may influence the immune system's response to various stimuli. Three of the studies suggest that manipulation consistently reduced the production of pro-inflammatory mediators associated with tissue damage and pain from articular structures. Two studies provide evidence that manipulation consistently reduced the production of pro-inflammatory mediators associated with tissue damage and pain from articular structures. Two studies provide evidence that manipulation may induce and enhance production of the immunoregulatory cytokine IL-2 and the production of immunoglobulins as well."

Alternative Medicine Goes Mainstream

Alternative medicine goes mainstream

Our Bozeman Chiropractors are excited to share this information with you....
Alternative medicine has been around for centuries. In its early years, alternative medicine was limited to snake oil peddlers and gullible people. Even after alternative medicine demonstrated its ability to heal and affect ailments it was unable to break into the mainstream medical community. Over time however, alternative medicine has made great strides in being accepted in the medical community.
The FDA has been instrumental in validating the claims made by the alternative medicine industry. An example of this is the increase creation of the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) by Congress as part of the National Institutes of Health. The budget in 1992 was $2 million and then increased to $114 million in 2003. Clearly, alternative medicine has arrived.
Consumers are following the FDA's suit by choosing alternative medicine treatments. In fact, consumers are spending almost equal amounts of money on alternative medicine as they do for conventional treatments. In 2007, Americans made approximately 600 million visits to alternative health care providers. Almost half of those visits were to chiropractors and massage therapists.
Shift of responsibility from Doctor to Patient
Alternative medicine is typically sought out by the patient. The patient takes on the responsibility of researching the alternative treatment methods prior to discussing them with their doctor. Studies have shown that even in the instances where the physician was skeptical about the treatment, such as with cancer patients, the patient will decide to try it anyway.
Choosing Safe and Effective Alternative Therapies
It is recommended that you do your homework before choosing an alternative therapy treatment. You want to be sure that the treatment is effective and accepted by the medical community. With the advent of the internet, you can access case studies from the FDA and the American medical Association, which will provide an unbiased opinion.
Chiropractic Treatment
For more than 50 years, the AMA was unwilling to endorse chiropractic medicine. Today, the AMA policy explicitly states that it is ethical for doctors to refer patients to chiropractors and for physicians to develop professional associations with doctors of chiropractic medicine. Because of the mainstream acceptance, the chiropractic field has grown substantially. Today, chiropractors are the third largest group of health care providers, after physicians and dentists. Insurance
Coverage for Alternative Medicine
Chiropractic treatment is, in general, a covered service on most health plans. Just as with other medical providers, chiropractors contract with networks of managed care and accept the fee schedule and treatment guidelines. The patient then pays a co-payment at each visit, or until the annual deductible is met.
